Vintage Gaming Info

Vintage gaming systems can be finicky, but with a little care most issues can be fixed.  Everything that High Energy sells is tested and should work properly so if you are having an issue with something purchased from us, let us know!

Cartridge Cleaning

Cartridge based systems have pins on the cartridge and a connector that must line up to work properly.  These pins can get worn, dirty and even corroded depending on how they are used and stored.  If you have a game that does not work work, or does not work properly, try taking a Q-Tip dipped in a little bit of rubbing alcohol (the higher the alcohol kind is ideal as it has less water content) and gently rub it across the pins of your cartridge.  If a bunch of green gunk shows up on your Q-Tip, you have found the likely culprit of your gaming malfunction.  Keep cleaning until you can rub a Q-Tip on the cartridge pins and gunk doesn't come off.  If you purchase a bunch of games at a yard sale, or a thrift store, you may want to clean them before sticking them in your system as it might gunk up your systems pin connector.  Often times a "glitchy" system can be fixed by a very quick cleaning.

NES Problems

The side loading design of the NES was created to prevent pin wear, but ultimately makes the system exceptionally finicky.  If you are having difficulty with many of your games not working, a cleaning of your systems pin connector will help.  If you are a serious NES gamer owning a system cleaner is a good idea, you can purchase one on Ebay for a few dollars. We are always happy to clean your system for FREE, even if your NES was purchased from someplace else.  If a cleaning doesn't fix your NES, then you need to replace the 72 pin connector.  High Energy does not currently carry these, but they can easily found and ordered online.  Replacing your connector is super easy, all you will need is a Philips head screw driver.  Once your pin connector is replaced your NES should (theoretically) work like new! The video below (not made by me) will show you how its done.
